Ear Exam
One

Review hearing aid use and relevant medical history.

This will include the make / model, and history of hearing aid use. You are asked if you have any ear-related symptoms and/or hearing concerns such as past ear surgeries.

Two

Conduct a physical exam of your ears including looking in your ears with an otoscope.

This instrument is used to visualize the ear drum to determine if there is any ear wax obstructing the ear canal.

Three

Perform a comprehensive Audiogram.

A pure tone test is conducted in a quiet environment where you wear headphones that are connected to an audiometer. The audiometer transmits a series of tones at a variety of volumes into your ears to determine the exact point or “threshold” at which your ears can hear various frequencies of sounds.

A speech test, which involves four parts. For the first two parts of the test, you listen for one and two syllable words and then repeat them. For the second two parts of the speech test, you listen and respond to the volume of pre-selected sentences. This determines the level at which you can detect and understand speech. These tests also help isolate any speech sounds that are difficult for you to understand clearly.

Four

Review and discuss the test results with you.

The results of your tests are recorded on a form called an audiogram, which the Hearing Care Professional reviews with you. The audiogram reflects your hearing loss in frequencies and decibels. You are shown the type, pattern and degree of hearing loss (if applicable), as well as the percentage of normal conversational speech you can still hear. Your Hearing Care Professional then relates these results to any concerns about your hearing that you shared.

Five

Recommend next steps for your hearing health.

Finally, the hearing care provider will recommend appropriate hearing solutions, based on your personal needs and requests, if hearing loss is detected.
